Someone once tried telling me the Deaf people were fascists. It was an eye opener and it came from a left winger – a woman who was a feminist in fact. Nevertheless does it have any ring of truth – especially when its hearing people who say this? I suppose its because we don’t somehow fit into their world – and that is why, in some oralist doctrines the hands of the Deaf must be tied as a punishment for not fitting into what is apparently a considerably sensible and fair world. Its clearly a form of fascism that is practised by the oralists. This is quite curious and it could well be part of the magical emporium of intent the hearing world has. The problem with speech is it can get thrown about in the most unsavoury ways – and the repetition with which it is done illustrates a modus that is deeply one sided anyway.
The interesting thing is we do not see the owners of this particular magical modicum shouting ‘fascist’ at those who practice such sensitivities that often concern their language as a supremacy against the Deaf. Its always the Deaf because by decree of the communication inequality, are the ones who have wrong footed it. Its absolutely disgusting.
Surprisingly in terms what would be considered fascists of the real sort are very clearly those who are orators. They are undoubtedly hearing. They are great leaders and lecture in very clever ways. They brainwash and coerce others. And they start wars on the premises of a whole load of bull about the other side being problematic or whatever. Just wait until the animal kingdom learns a thing or two, then rises up against homo sapiens. No surprise the humans will start calling the animals fascists, unable to see it is humanity’s own sick doctrines that has caused such a movement en masse against humanity. Perhaps quite fortuitously, the deeply held human belief is the animal kingdom will never have the cognizance to undertake such endeavours. No doubt that’s the same kind of belief which is held against the Deaf – because, well, we are seen as animals too… Our wrongly synched breathing makes hearing people very angry and it often primes a hatred that is insipid and massively phobic.
In recent times there have been so many degenerates – Putin, Netanyahu, and others. How anyone with any sense of credibility or even positivity could equate such great oratory fascist endeavours with Deaf people I don’t know, but evidently its a modus of the comprehensive distortion that hearing societies feature so strongly. There is actually a true story about a Deaf person who led a fight against what was clearly a fascist movement, but the hearing world doesn’t seem to care as it gets lost in its own proclivities and aims for a worse and worser world where inevitably the Deaf, because of communication problems, will undoubtedly become the victims rather.
Barely anyone has done a homework on many atrocities, including those in the past history and not even those that are recent – not even Serbia, nor even Gaza, where deeply insidious genocidal atrocities are occurring. The World Federation of the Deaf has commented quite a number of times on the Gaza situation which basically shows that there is a much deeper and more duplicitous treatment when it comes the the Deaf – which is that despite the Israel aggressor’s assertion of ‘moral’ credentials, besides a number of other things, it is in fact tying the hands of particularly Deaf Palestinians it discovers – as a precursor to any number of other abject situations – and that is a clear indication that audism also thrives in these horrific circumstances. Its is, in a sense, an operative indication that tells us speech operationalises a deeply fascist modicum even in the most abject situations.
That aside, one of the worst incidences of being called by such insensible description was when several of us were lucky to get to see a lecture with Noam Chomsky. John Pilger and others were there too as part of the billing, and we also attended Pilger’s talk. However Chomsky was the one especially that we wished to see. Chomsky for me was about how euphemisms were employed to cover for war and genocide. You know, those clever twists on linguistics and description to make it look as if an imperialist war is totally just and the rest of it when the exact opposite is being practised – and its why Chomsky turned against the military machine.
We had BSL interpreters for the occasion which took place for the Marxism festival at the UCL Union in Malet Street. It was the early 1990s though I don’t remember the year and have tried to find an exact date in the Living Marxism journal. It was the summer when the festival is held anyway. The Chomsky segment of the festival was fully booked out but luckily we had seats. Around eight seats were provided right in front of the whole auditorium and almost right next to the panel area. Our seats were actually right in front but this was the only way we were going to be able to see the interpreters.
As soon as we sat down, many hearing people in the other front rows started protesting. When the organisers tried to explain why we were there, a number in the audience called us fascists. They shouted that as well as other stuff and demanded that we get removed and some were on the verge of getting quite violent with their profanities. It was very uncomfortable and even though it was eventually resolved its something that has not been forgotten, especially as it was the Marxism festival. The mentality of some is just so gross.
Its not the only instance as there have been others. For example I was in a XR demonstration at Marble Arch and then because I am not hearing, I did not know there was a group of singers coming my way and when I didn’t move out of the way people started getting angry and calling me fascist. Yes I know, speech is a violent medium and it must be implemented somehow in order to make others feel uncomfortable or worse. Surprisingly I’m left wing too and its why I was supporting XR among many other causes as my social media account with thousands of followers shows. Nowadays I refused to participate in any XR or other demonstrations. There was an XR Deaf group too and despite initial promises, its no longer extant because of similar attitudes. The world drives us away and they, the hearing, very clearly can’t see the damage that is being done.
When I first started work following school, this was working for the council in the early 1970s, I was asked to attend a union meeting as it was very important. I could not understand any of it or what they were discussing. So I left. The next day at work one of the union reps came to me and asked why had I left. I tried to explain I could follow it and indicated I was not going to attend any more union meetings. Immediately I was called a blackleg, a piece of scum and worse, and they were poking me in the chest and shouting other stuff and being quite aggressive. After that I decided never to be part of a union again. Its surprising the hearing think they have every right to treat us in the most despicable ways – but its simply not acceptable.
It seems to me hearing people want to have and embrace closet fascism – and always look the other way when it happens. No matter what denomination or belief. Oralism and audism belongs to no particular alignment but to everyone that speaks.
As the WFD has said – ‘No more!’
💬 “In 1880, Milan tried to ban sign languages in the education of deaf learners. 145 years later, we say: No more.”
